Saturday,
July 25, 2009, twenty members of our club set off on a tour to
celebrate the 136th birthday of Henry Ford. We started off with six
collector cars and some modern iron to Crawfordsville, Indiana. At St.
Joseph, Illinois, the Bezjians met us with a car load.
Our group
met up with the Danville, Illinois old car club at the VA Hospital for
a car show. The Danville folks turned out with 15 cars. A large number
of veterans came out to view, kick tires, and slam doors on the cars.
The most important part was to hear their stories.

After
the car show we left for Crawfordsville. One member of the Danville
group went along with us. At Covington, Indiana we pick up another
fellow and a passenger in his 1940 Plymouth 2 door. Then it was on to
the Quality Inn (formerly the Holiday Inn) at Crawfordsville for a
buffet diner at noon. A crowd of the Ben Hur Old Car Club was waiting
for us. At this time we shared news and who owns what cars but most of
all we celebrated (early) George Scharf’s 90th birthday with ‘here is
your life’ comments from Mike Balogh, cake and singing Happy Birthday.
The next stop was the Ropkey Armor Museum northeast of
the city. There was much to see – tanks, jeeps, rubber tired heavy gun
carriers, helicopters, fixed winged plans, boats and more. Col. Fred
Ropkey (ret), whose museum it is, was on hand to give lots of details
about the collection.
